Week 3 Blog Post

Well as we conclude week 3 of class and our second week of blogging, one question I have is how we find the time to incorporate all of these technological enhancements to our classrooms. Does anyone have any suggestions? While I have found blogging to be a useful tool for teachers, parents, and students, it also requires time to read through postings and comments. I forsee using it in my classroom on a monthly basis to write up an overview of the material covered in class and a way to post comments regarding this material.

As we are learning how to create Internet Scavenger Hunts and collaborating, I am realizing how flexible everyone must be to complete an assignment because everyone's schedules are so different. It definitely takes time, commitment, and good communication to effectively collaborate on a group project. In school, I would definitely have to give my students class time to complete the Internet Scavenger Hunts because I can't assume that they have access to the internet at home. If you are using Internet Scavenger Hunts in your classroom, how have they assisted you? What are the benefits and the down falls?

Chasady - I also wondered about the time factor when incorporating blogs, wikis, scavenger hunts, etc. into my classroom. I think your idea of using blogs monthly is a great. That way, it isn't overwhelming for the educator or the students who may need to find time during the school day to complete posts (yet everyone still benefits from the use of such technologies).

Thank you for stating on my Blog that learning how to type is the first step in learning how to use the computer. I praise you for this comment. So many people just don't get it. We use Bernie's Typing Travels (not a big fan of this software) and Type to Learn. Here is a good Web site with a lot of links to typing exercises you can do online and also to free software you can download.

Let me know what you think. I have many more.

Well said. I took some time out over the past few days (no Internet connection). I did a lot of thinking about everything we have been doing and I agree about the timing constraints. I love technology and all it has to offer, but we have to be realistic. So many teachers already have so much on their plates. I guess maybe that is where we as ITS are supposed to help out?

I use scavenger hunts in my classroom, but 1. I teach completely in a lab and 2. Part of my curriculum is to teach students how to search and research (not just surf) the Internet effectively. A downfall I have is time. I only see my students once every 6 days.

Thank you so much for your input and the typing websites! I feel like I've been talking to a brick wall at my school when it comes to trying to get the technology department to invest in keyboarding software and time to implement a keyboarding class. I am so glad to know that I am not alone! I guess we will just have to keep banging on their doors until the message gets through!!!
